How to Choose the Right Countertop Material for Your Kitchen Remodel

Countertops are a standout kitchen feature, and getting the right countertop material is essential. In addition to improving your kitchen’s aesthetic, it can make food prep easier.

This article will review various countertop material options, ensuring you find the one that’s right for you.

Granite

Granite is a popular countertop material choice. It is tough and durable, so it stands up well to damage. It is also extremely heat resistant. The material comes in a variety of colors and patterns. This allows you to choose one that best compliments your kitchen and is also very easy to clean. On the downside, granite is highly porous, so it must be sealed regularly. It is also expensive, and it is heavy and, therefore, difficult to install.

Marble

Marble is a high-end countertop material. It is known for its attractive veining, providing a unique aesthetic, and it comes in a wide range of colors. The stone holds up well to heat, and it’s resistant to damage. However, it is vulnerable to scratching and staining, so it must be sealed at least once a year. Like granite, marble is also priced at a premium.

Soapstone

Soapstone is a great countertop material as it is a highly nonporous material. This makes it stain resistant. It is also heat, resistant and bacteria-resistant. The material comes in an attractive range of gray, green, and blue shades with a marble-like veining. Minimal damage allows it to develop a natural patina, so it gets more attractive with age.

Disadvantages to consider include soapstone’s susceptibility to scratches and dents. It is also recommended to treat the countertop with mineral oil once a month to help it develop its patina.

Quartz

Quartz is ideal as it resembles marble and granite, but it is a lot more affordable. It is strong, durable, resistant to staining, nonporous, easy to clean, and resistant to mold, mildew, and bacteria.

The nonporous design means you won’t have to seal the countertop regularly. However, it is vulnerable to heat, so you should avoid placing hot items on top of it. It may also fade under direct sunlight.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is often used for kitchen countertops as it is nonporous. This makes it easy to clean. It is also resistant to mold, mildew, and staining. Its modern look means it is ideal for contemporary kitchens.

While the material offers many benefits, water spots and fingerprints that occur on the surface will be highly visible. It is also susceptible to scratches, dents, and abrasive damage. There are various countertop materials available. The one you choose will depend on your culinary needs, your kitchen aesthetic, your budget, and other factors.
